Menu Access:
Character EDI 7 4
GUI: EDI; System
Use this function to perform basic file management of the input, output and backup
files associated with an EDI file location. You will be prompted for a file location code.
Use the |UP/DOWN ARROW| keys to browse the available file location codes on file.
After selecting the file location code that you want to work with, you will be prompted
for the type of files that you want to work with. Enter "I" to work with input
files, "O" to work with output files or "B" to work with backup files.
If you choose to work with backup files, then you will be asked for type of backup file to
work with. Enter "I" to work with backed up input files, or "O" to
work with backed up output files.
After entering the type of files that you want to work with, a list of files will appear
up to a maximum of 999. Use the cursor keys, and the |PAGE UP/DOWN| keys to move between
files. Once a file is highlighted, press the |SPACEBAR| key to select it. An asterisk
("*") appears beside the file to indicate that it was selected. Press the
|SPACEBAR| key again and the file is deselected.
Once you have selected the files you want to work with, press the |GO| key. If there are
not any files selected, a message displays and you will be prompted once again for the
type of files to work with.
You will then enter the type of action (operation) you want to perform on the files
selected. The following file actions can be performed:
Operation | Description |
Restore | This option allows you to append input or output files that have been
backed up using the Load EDI Data, Receive EDI Data, and EDI
Data File Transfer functions to the input or output file respectively for this file
location. This option is usually chosen to allow you to process an input file again after
a system or hardware crash, or to allow you to send transaction sets again without having
to regenerate them. When restoring EDI data, the system attempts to lock the input or output directory, as well as the backup directory for the file location specified. If it cannot, you will be asked whether or not you want to continue to attempt to restore the files selected. If the input file for the file location contains wildcard characters, then the system will prompt you for the file name to use to restore the backed up files to. The system will ensure that the file name entered is valid, and that the files that are to be restored in the appropriate directory. |
Copy | Allows you to copy the files selected to a file or directory |
Delete | Allows you to delete the files selected |
Rename | Allows you to rename a file to another file name in the directory where the file is located. |
Move | Allows you to move the files selected to a file or directory. |
Append | Allows you to append the files selected to another file |
Exit | This option is used when you are done performing file management functions on the files selected. |
If you copy or move files, you will be asked for a file or directory name when only one
file is selected, or a directory name when more than one file is selected. If the system
is unable to determine whether the file name entered is a file or a directory, you will be
asked to indicate what it is. If you append files, you will be asked for the file name
that you want to append the files selected to.
Only one file can be selected at a time when you rename files. As well, you can only
rename files within the current directory that you are working in.
If a file name is entered, then the system will check to see if the file exists. If it
does you, will be asked if you want to overwrite it.
The system will then check to see if the target directory exists based on the file or
directory name entered.
If the target directory does not exist, the system will ask you if you want to create it.
If you do not want to create this directory, you will be prompted for another file or
directory name. Otherwise, the system will attempt to create the target directory. If it
cannot, then you will receive an error message.
If everything is fine, you will be asked if you want to proceed with file operation
specified. If you choose to proceed, the system will perform the
file operation on those files selected.
NOTE: In order to prevent tampering with EDI data files, it is recommended that this
function be password protected, and that only experienced personnel be allowed access.
As well, make sure that you have the appropriate file permissions and enough disk space
before proceeding with the file operation chosen.
Before performing a file operation, the system checks to see if there is a file in the
target directory with the same name as the file being processed. If a file exists, then
you will be asked if you want to overwrite it or delete it. Enter "Y" to
overwrite or delete the file, "N" to skip this file, or "A" to
overwrite or delete this file and all other files without being asked again.
